Info-Visualization Trough the Eyes and Talent of 10 Brazilian Designers

After reading here on Inspired Mag the excellent post Shell Harris from Infographics Showcase wrote, on the growing fascination that computer graphics has been exercising in the world, I’ve decided to bring some examples from Brazil – where I currently live.

Infographic design in Brazil is considered to be one of the best in the world. At this year’s Malofiej, the Oscars of design information assigned by SND , Brazil toke 8 awards (you can check the whole list here), and it’s been like that for the past years. In a country where the habit of reading newspapers and news magazines still have an enormous margin for growth, infographics are increasingly assuming a role far beyond news and data visualization – the role of capturing and retaining more and more readers.

So, without further ado, I leave you with 10 of the best Brazilian infographic designers, as well as the links for their online portfolios:

Marco Vergotti

For the past 12 years, Marco has established himself as one of the top Brazilian info-designers. He has worked in some of the most well-known magazines and newspapers here, such as Galileu, Exame, Scientific American, História Viva, Discovery Magazine and is currently at Época magazine, where his has won several awards, including a Malofiej Bronze medal. Flavia Marinho

Flavia Marinho is a graphic designer at Bahia’s newspaper A Tarde since 2007. Currently part of the team’s cultural supplement, this year she won an award for excellence in the 31st. edition of The Best of Newspaper Design Creative Competition, SND, for her work on the Special celebrating Salvador’s 460 years of existence . Ricardo Davino

Ricardo’s first contact with computer graphics happened when he was a trainee at the Folha de S. Paulo, arguably the most important newspaper in Brazil. Majored in Fine Arts at UNESP, in 2006, he still stands there, working as a designer. Have a look at his work on Flickr.

Thiago Lyra

Thiago Lyra is a graphic designer and illustrator living in São Paulo. Since 2005 he has been developing infographics for the Saúde Magazine, and won a bronze medal in 17th Malofiej, as well as an indication to the Esso Journalism Award 2006. Some of his best works are here on Flickr.

Fábio Abreu

Like so many info-designers, Fábio started doing comics, before embracing journalism. In 1995 he moved from Bahia to Joinville to work as a designer in the A Noticia newspaper, where he became interested in infographic design. He currently holds there the Chief-Art-Editor position, and his work is available online here.

Rodolfo França

Rodolfo França has been working with magazines for the last 6 years in some of the greatest Brazilian Editors, like Abril and Trip, as well as the Anglo-Brazilian magazine Jungle Drums, in London. Currently works at Editora Globo, in Época São Paulo magazine, and his online portfolio can be found here.

Eduardo Asta

Although he holds the position of Assistant Editor at Folha de São Paulo Art Department, most of time Eduardo is doing infographics, usually the ones the newspaper cares more about. He already won two Malofiej bronze medals and one SND Excellence award, and you can see his portfolio on Flickr, as well as his LinkedIn profile for more info.

Gerson Mora

During his 20-year career as a designer, Gerson produced illustrations and graphics to some of the most respectable brazilian publications, including Galileo, Globo Rural, 4 Rodas, Gazeta Mercantil and many others. He won several awards during that period, such as an Esso Prize (Category Graphic Creation Magazine), a SND Award of Excellence in 2009 (Category Breaking News) and at Malofiej 18 (Bronze Medal, Category Online Breaking News). Marcelo Pliger

Working since 1997 for the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, Marcelo has developed extraordinary designs and illustrations for some heavy-weights like the supermarket chain Carrefour, Infraero, Alcoa and Getulio Vargas Foundation, among others. For his work, he has already received over 25 awards in Brazil and abroad – the most recent being a commendation from the Society of Newspaper Design in 2010, as well as a silver medal and two bronze in this year edition of Malofiej. Currently, he also develops research on graphic design at PUC University, and is part of the team that drew up the new graphic design of the Folha de S. Paulo, under the coordination of designer Eliane Stephan, scheduled for release briefly this year. Gabriel Gianordoli

Gabriel is a designer and illustrator for the Superinteressante magazine, one of the most graphically impressive Brazilian publications. Before that, at the Editora Abril, worked on the first Alternate Reality Game (ARG) in Brazil, a multimedia project involving magazine, urban interventions, websites, games and blogs. Graduated in graphic design from the Federal University of Espirito Santo (UFES), he’s deeply influenced by the works of Edward Tufte, Chris Ware and John Maeda. You can see these influences well printed in his portfolio.

It’s needless to say that there are many other awesome designers, whose talent and dedication will ensure the continuing growth and international recognition of the art of Brazilian info-design. I recommend you have a look at this Flickr Group, and enjoy as much as I do the marvelous talent of these young designers.
